The integration of dynamic energy pricing with PAT operation represents an opportunity for water utilities to reduce their costs. The computational model developed using optimization algorithms allows for efficient operation of PAT in WSSs.
What is a pumped storage facility?
Pumped storage facilities are built to push water from a lower reservoir uphill to an elevated reservoir during times of surplus electricity. In pumping mode, electric energy is converted to potential energy and stored in the form of water at an upper elevation, which is why it is sometimes called a “water battery”.

In water scarce areas, pumped storage schemes are used as an alternative to conventional hydroelectric power stations to provide the power needed during peak periods. Instead of the water being discharged, it is retained in the system and re-used.
